DO-IT-YOURSELF WEDDING PLANNING RESOURCES
- The Bridal Bar Harmony Walton, former contributing editor to Inside Weddings Magazine, is the genius behind The Bridal Bar: a high-end complimentary planning experience where brides can educate themselves about L.A.'s chic and unique vendors, products, concepts, and locations. She invites you to preview their work with a glass of champagne on a comfy couch--a great way to imagine and plan your perfect event. The couch is located in West Hollywood and is open M-F 10-6, or by appointment: 310.858.0119.
- If It's Hip, It's Here.Com Okay, bet you a hundred bucks you'll scream, "OMIGOD!" like I did when you see Laura Sweet's blog--it's beyond fantastic if you crave all that's new in design (and everything else.) The art/design/shopping/trends links in the right-hand column will provide you with ample ideas for with your sleek and unique lifestyle wedding, from designer art paper for your invites to home furnishings to jewelry (including some awesome ideas for wedding rings) to ecoshopping to fashion to baby gear to--well, everything. Check out her thisnext.com postings of Seriously Good Valentine's Gifts if you want another dose of faboo shopping amazement. Enjoy, and just PayPal me the C-note when you're done.
- At-LA.Com Wedding Referral Anything you can think of, its here! This is the most comprehensive listing for ANYTHING in Los Angeles and environs. An MTG.Com Favorite!
- Craig's List, Los Angeles Another indispensible website for ANYTHING you need. Place or search ads to find unusual event services, clothes, locations, jobs, housing--in short, for anything you could possibly need (or sell) in life (we've even married folks who met on Craig's List!)
- LAOkay.Com, aka Things To Do In Los Angeles LAOkay is another great all-around web reference replete with helpful listings of local parks, gardens, museums, and other public sites for those seeking novel or low-cost ceremony locations. They now also sport a section of Wedding Planning links, but don't forget to check out the Farmer's Market, Weird and Wacky, and Giant Objects categories while you're there.
- The U.S. Naval Observatory Sun and Moon Data Calculator Page Planning a sunset or sunrise wedding, but aren't sure what time they occur on your wedding date? Never fear; at the U.S. Naval Observatory webpage, you can enter your wedding date and determine the exact times of these celestial events for any area of the world. Your tax dollars at work!! P.S.: we recommend you start your "sunset" ceremony an hour or so before sunset, so you can complete your ceremony and have time to take some post-wedding photos in that beautiful golden light at the end of day...then you can enjoy your first sunset together as husband and wife.
- KWMap.Net: A Keyword Map for the Entire Internet Here's a creative and interesting alternative to your standard search engine: an intuitive, visual mapping of the connections between websites. Now you can play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon and find your wedding vendors, too!
- Rainbow Wedding Network Listings of local gay-friendly wedding providers and an online gift registry, too!
- Indiebride.Com Indiebride is a non-commercial labor of love for those who are sick and tired of the Marital Industrial Complex hard-sell websites. They have a bridal "clothing swap" in their Trousseau section, an etiquette column for the alternative set, and sassy, informative articles for brides with brains.
- About.Com's Marriage Resource Pages About.Com is a great archive portal (we love the "Urban Legends" section!) but their Marriage Resource pages are truly exceptional. You'll find excellent articles on issues within marriage, pre-marriage counseling, the latest weddings and marriages in the news, how to keep your marriage strong, plus much more. Far better than any Cosmo quiz on relationships; you can also sign up for an email newsletter with links to their info-packed articles and features for free.
- WatchTheWater This service provided by the L.A. County Department of Beaches allows you to access live L.A. beach area webcams online so you can check out the weather, parking, and crowd action. You can even have folks from out-of-town watch your wedding if you plan it right...though everyone may look rather small.
